How to Start Seeds in an Egg Carton

An egg carton offers a simple, cost-effective, and eco-friendly solution for starting seeds at home.

– An empty egg carton – Seed-starting potting soil – Seeds of your choice – A spoon – A tray or plate

Supplies and Materials Needed

Brown Rice

1. Pick an empty egg carton and empty the eggs. A cardboard egg carton is ideal because it’s biodegradable and can be planted directly into the soil.

Step 01

1. Poke a small hole in the bottom of each egg cup to allow excess water to drain. Use a toothpick, skewer, or sharp object for this step.

Step 02

Spoon seed-starting potting soil into each cup, filling them about three-quarters full.

Step 03

Place 1–3 seeds in each cup, depending on the size of the seeds.
